Power bill too high? Duke Energy and N.C. Republicans think you should pay more!

In recent weeks, Duke Energy has been meeting with state Republicans behind closed doors to create a bill that will determine our collective energy future. Now that it’s public, we know just how bad it is for North Carolinian families and businesses.

The bill would:

  • Drive up power bills by allowing Duke to increase rates for up to three years at a time — over the next decade — with little public oversight or transparency
  • Increase profits for Duke Energy while making power bills less affordable, especially for low- and fixed-income customers.”
  • Restrict state officials’ oversight of Duke Energy
  • Force North Carolinians to waste billions of dollars for dirty and unnecessary fossil fuel plants and pipelines, preventing us from achieving Governor Cooper’s goal of reducing climate pollution by 70% by 2030.

In the Governor’s own words:

“It’s clear they need to go back to the drawing board and negotiate with a broader spectrum of stakeholders in order to get a better plan.”

Simply stated, this bill must be stopped.
